Birkenstocks are not sneakers and cleaning them like sneakers is how they get wrecked. A classic Birkenstock is really three different cleaning jobs on one shoe, and each part has its own rule.
Most people assume the footbed is bare cork. It is not. The surface your foot sits on is a suede leather liner. The cork is a cork-latex core underneath it, and the only cork you can actually see is the rim around the midsole. That distinction matters, because it is the exposed cork rim and its sealant that water destroys.
How we clean them
- We identify your model first. A classic cork Arizona and an Arizona EVA look similar to most people and have completely different rules, as do the Exquisite footbeds. Getting this wrong is what ruins a pair.
- Never submerged, and never held under a running tap. Birkenstock’s own care guidance states that most styles “should not be immersed in water” and that “over saturation can compromise the integrity of the sealant materials.” Their own cleaner directions say “do not hold the shoe under running water.”
- Suede and nubuck straps get the dry treatment, not soap and water. Birkenstock’s routine for these is a rubber nubuck brush and a lint-free cloth, napping the surface back up. Soap and water is what Birkenstock prescribes for Birko-Flor, their synthetic upper, and only that.
- The footbed liner is cleaned as the leather it is. On a standard suede-lined footbed that means leather shampoo and a small amount of water, which is Birkenstock’s own instruction. On an Exquisite or smooth-leather-lined footbed it means a damp cloth only, with no shampoo and nothing abrasive.
- The cork rim is checked and resealed where the finish has worn. Sealer goes on the cork and nowhere else. Birkenstock warns that it must not touch the footbed or the uppers, because it marks them.
- Deodorised.
- Air dried away from direct heat and sun. Birkenstock is clear that heat is a hazard to cork footbeds and EVA soles, so no radiators, no hairdryers, and not left in a hot car.
What to expect
The dark footprint shape worn into the footbed is sweat and skin oil absorbed into the suede liner over years of wear. We can lighten it and we will get the pair looking considerably fresher, but on a well-worn pair some of that shading usually stays. Anyone promising you a footbed back to its original colour is overselling.
Suede is an honest material and shows its age. We will tell you upfront if a mark is not coming out rather than take your money and hand back a disappointment.

Questions, answered
Can you clean the cork?
Yes. The cork you can actually see is the rim around the midsole, and we clean it and reseal it where the finish has worn through. Sealer goes on the cork and nowhere else, because Birkenstock warns that it marks the footbed and the uppers.
Will the dark footprint mark come out?
We can lighten it. That shading is sweat and skin oil absorbed into the suede liner over years of wear, so on a well-worn pair some of it usually stays. We will tell you what we think is realistic before we start.
Do you clean EVA Birkenstocks differently?
Yes. EVA models have no cork in them at all and handle water happily, so they follow a different routine to a cork pair. An Arizona and an Arizona EVA look alike to most people, which is why we identify your model at intake instead of assuming.
Will the straps still feel soft afterwards?
Suede and nubuck straps are cleaned dry with a rubber nubuck brush and the nap worked back up, which is Birkenstock's own routine for those materials. Soap and water is only used on Birko-Flor, their synthetic upper. Very old straps that have already hardened with age will feel cleaner, not new.
How long does it take?
48 hours from collection or drop-off. We will keep you posted along the way.
Will my shoes look brand new?
We get most pairs looking almost as new. Results vary by material, age and stain type, and some materials can change once cleaned, so we are always honest about what is possible.
Do you clean suede and nubuck?
Yes. Suede and nubuck are cleaned under the premium material option, which is priced for the extra care they need.
